Part of me thinks the Mississippi is probably Louisiana’s most famous Bayou, but the Teche would be a close second I imagine. My wife picked this up at the Tabasco factory of all places, hoping to learn a bit more about the cajun/acadian region.

It’s difficult for us to understand just how important these bayou were before railroads, automobiles, and interstate highways. This wasn’t just a river, it was the primary means of travel and shipping commerce. If you want to understand the region, and more broadly how trade and life worked when the rivers were the arteries by which the land became accessible, this is an entertaining and enlightening read.
