When people say, “this particular issue is complex” usually what they mean is, “I have no rational justification, but I’m right anyway.”

In my experience, most things are not in fact very complex at all. What makes them complex is our desire to justify them in the face of criticism. Complexity becomes a scapegoat by which we can ignore the simple moral core and focus on the minutia.
